King Richard’s Liturgical Design & Contracting, is brought in to manage the restoration and removal of a 19th century reredos which includes six tons of marble and mosaics for Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Ayer Mansion in Boston.

Project #: P-2031
Location: Boston, MA
Project Type: Removal, Reredos
Date: November 2021

In 2021, King Richard’s Liturgical Design & Contracting, was brought in to manage the restoration and actual removal of six tons of marble and mosaic chapel, and 19th century reredos at the 20th Century Tiffany Ayer Mansion designed by celebrated master Louis Comfort Tiffany in Boston, MA.

Work to preserve the interior began in 2000. At the time, the Trimount Foundation, affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, owned the property. The 15,600-square foot building, located in Boston’s posh Back Bay, was purchased by developers in 2021 for $12.5 million. It last served as the Bayridge Residence and Cultural Center for female graduate students for decades.

King Richards was hired in 2021 to preserve the chapels marble contents with carefulness and grace. “The Tiffany-designed artifacts were irreplaceable, so preservation was paramount,” explains Rick Lair, owner of King Richard’s Liturgical Design & Contracting. “We understood the gravity of this endeavor.”

King Richard’s met the challenge with a meticulous level of professionalism and attention. It was one of the most high profile, high stakes projects that KR has undertaken.

The chapel contents will be reassembled by King Richard’s, along with other items preserved from the mansion, when construction of the new Catholic Center is completed in Washington, D.C.
